Submission Guidelines

Hello, you have reached planet Unstaged. You may encounter a variety of lifeforms during your stay. Please find an incomplete field guide below:

Flash Drama: Short theatrical moments, less than a page.

Visions: Imagined performance, a synopsis. Dance, protest, puppet, whatever.

Stories: What you tell over dinner or around the campfire, true or fantastical.

Dialogue: Conversations with or without a setting.

Monologue: Words for a single character to say out loud. Soliloquy counts.

Text: Words in some order that want to be adapted, interpreted, or incanted.

Reviews: With a focus on emerging artists and interdisciplinary work. Please send a note on the proposed review so we can verify it's a fit for the magazine.

Essays: Journaling on performance, unconventional, pedestrian, classical. Please send a note on the proposed essay so we can verify it's a fit for the magazine.

Visual Art: We're always looking for visual art to feature alongside text. All mediums accepted, with a preference for work with a strong sense of character, space, texture, or dreams.

Also considering:

  • Stage directions
  • Photography
  • Prompts for improvisations
  • One-page RPGs
  • Other forms of creative writing that relate to performance.

Impossible Dramatics

Strive for the unstageable. We want playwrights, poets, musicians, dancers, dramaturgs, game designers, and clowns. Dear reader, we want whatever it is you are.

Submissions can be anything but long. This is not a ten minute play festival. It’s a rag. We only publish unproduced work, but will consider a piece that's been workshopped or read. We prioritize short-form originals but will consider excerpts on a case-by-case basis.

Here are some prompts:

  • A summoning ritual
  • Dance notation
  • Stage directions, from someone’s perspective other than the author
  • That one ghost story you always tell
  • Law and Order: On Ice!
  • Something with an elephant

To submit, send your work and a short bio to submissions@unstagedmagazine.org
